About OASIS

The OASIS (Ontologically Anthropocentric Sensory Immersive Simulation) is a virtual reality simulator accessible from every functional computer terminal on Earth. It was created by James Halliday, who built it initially as a massively multiplayer online game, but it evolved into a globally networked virtual reality world.

In the OASIS, you can be anyone you want to be, regardless of who you actually are. It's a place where the limits of reality—and your imagination—are your only constraints.

The OASIS was created by James Halliday and Ogden Morrow, the co-founders of Gregarious Simulation Systems (GSS). Initially launched in 2012, it revolutionized the way people interacted with computers and each other.

After Halliday's death in 2040, he left behind his greatest creation: an Easter egg hidden somewhere in the vast digital universe of the OASIS. The first person to find the egg would inherit his entire fortune and control of the OASIS itself.

This Y2K Edition of the OASIS represents what might have been if Halliday had created his virtual world in the year 2000, using the web technologies available at that time.

At the time of his death, Halliday had amassed a fortune of more than two hundred and forty billion dollars, making him the richest man in history. But his last will and testament specified that his entire estate, including his controlling share of GSS stock, would be placed in escrow until someone discovered an Easter egg hidden inside the OASIS.
